Gita Gopinath Bids Farewell to IMF After 7 Remarkable Years of Global Challenges

Gita Gopinath reflected on her tenure at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), noting that her years there were marked by the COVID-19 crisis, the war in Ukraine, rising inflation, and worldwide instability.

The IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director announced her decision to step down in a video message shared on X. She described her journey at the institution as being shaped by a series of historic global challenges, ranging from the pandemic to escalating geopolitical conflicts.

“It has truly been an extraordinary seven years at the IMF,” Gopinath said in the video. “I joined in 2019, giving me just about a year to settle in before the pandemic hit in 2020. Since then, the world has faced nonstop disruptions — from the Ukraine conflict to inflationary pressures, from geopolitical strains to major shifts in global trade.”
