Good news! Work permit changes in Canada

Canada: This is good news for Indian students studying in Canada. The Government of Canada has made key changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP). Students who have completed a Master's degree program of less than two years duration are now also eligible for a 3-year PGW. The government of that country has implemented these changes from February 15, 2024.

However, from September 1, 2024, students enrolled in Curriculum Licensing Agreement programs will no longer be eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program. It also extended the special measures for distance education and PGW validity till August 31, 2024. A post-graduation work permit is an open work permit granted to foreign students after completing their studies in Canada. PGW holders can work as many hours as they like for any company anywhere in Canada. How long the PGW is valid depends on the level and duration of the study program and the expiry date of the passport.

Are all foreign students eligible?

All foreign students who have completed degree programs of at least two years in length at approved educational institutions in Canada and intend to stay in Canada temporarily for several years are eligible for the 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP). And when it comes to master's degree programs, the duration should be at least 8 months (or 900 hours of Quebec credentials). A 3-year PGW can be applied for even if the duration of a Master's degree is less than 2 years as long as all other eligibility criteria are met. But this does not apply to certificate or diploma programs.
