Indian-Origin Man Fatally Attacks Registered Offender in California – Justice or Crime?

Fremont, California, USA: 29-year-old Varun Suresh, an Indian-origin resident, has been taken into custody in Fremont, California, after fatally stabbing a man named David Brimmer outside his residence. Police said Suresh had no prior connection with Brimmer but admitted that for years he had wanted to target a registered offender, as he believed they endanger children.

According to investigators, Suresh came across Brimmer’s profile on the California Megan’s Law website, which lists individuals with past convictions. During questioning, he reportedly told officers, “It isn’t your job to decide if Heaven will accept them, but it’s your duty to send them to the gates.” Suresh added that he did not intend to flee after the incident and expected to be arrested, but believed that eliminating a child abuser would be “cool.”

Records show that in 1995, Brimmer had been convicted of engaging in inappropriate acts with a minor and served nine years in prison.

The Incident and Chase

After learning Brimmer’s address, Suresh allegedly armed himself with a knife and pretended to be an accountant going door-to-door to meet potential clients. Carrying a bag, a notebook, and a cup of coffee, he first visited a few neighbours before arriving at Brimmer’s home. Once he confirmed Brimmer’s identity, he pulled out the knife and confronted him.

Brimmer tried to escape and ran outside, prompting Suresh to chase him through the neighbourhood. Police reports say Suresh asked Brimmer during the pursuit whether he believed in God and what his last words would be. Brimmer eventually entered a neighbour’s house, pleading for help and asking them to call the police. Suresh forced his way in and told the neighbour to report Brimmer as the “crazy one.”

Inside the kitchen, Suresh reportedly told Brimmer, “It’s over, you need to repent,” before slashing his throat. The neighbour asked both men to leave the house, but the confrontation ended fatally inside. Later, Suresh told investigators he would have surrendered on his own if officers hadn’t arrived first.

In his statement, he said: “I’m hoping that since the victim was a child abuser—and everyone hates child abusers—it should be cool. It should be cool.” These remarks were documented in court filings.

Suresh’s Past Run-Ins with the Law

Authorities also revealed that this was not Suresh’s first encounter with law enforcement. In 2021, he was arrested for making a false bomb threat, issuing criminal threats, and burglary after leaving a suspicious bag at Hyatt Place. This incident occurred the day after Fremont police shot and fatally injured another suspect in an unrelated case. At that time, Suresh reportedly told police that he believed the CEO of Hyatt Hotels was also a child abuser.
