Indian-Origin Mindvalley CEO Stopped by FBI in Miami, Flags Rising Xenophobia

Miami, Florida, USA: Mindvalley CEO Vishen Lakhiani has raised concerns about rising xenophobic attitudes in the United States after he was stopped for questioning by federal agents upon his arrival in Miami, despite holding a valid O-1 visa.

Lakhiani, an entrepreneur of Indian descent who was born in Malaysia, shared on Instagram that FBI officials approached him immediately after he stepped off the aircraft. He said the officers questioned him about his recent international travel, including visits to Dubai, Istanbul, and Brazil, and also asked for access to his social media accounts and his WhatsApp number.

Although he noted that the agents were courteous and “simply doing their job,” Lakhiani described the experience as unsettling.

In his post, he criticised what he sees as the growing acceptance of anti-immigrant narratives in American politics. According to him, “fear-driven rhetoric, xenophobia, and scapegoating immigrants by politicians lacking real solutions” have contributed to a more closed and intolerant environment in the country.

Lakhiani claimed this climate is already affecting the U.S.’s global appeal, saying tourism has reportedly declined by around 15%, while international student interest has fallen by nearly 20%.

His remarks triggered significant discussion online. Several commenters said they had experienced or feared similar treatment. One user mentioned moving away from the U.S., even with a talent visa, because of persistent anxiety, while another said they chose not to travel to the U.S. for the next few years due to concerns over racial profiling. Another commenter urged border officials to reassess how they treat incoming visitors.

The incident has further fueled public debate surrounding immigration procedures, airport security practices, and how foreign professionals are handled when entering the United States.

Lakhiani is the founder and chief executive of Mindvalley, a U.S.-based company known for its online learning programs focused on personal growth, leadership, well-being, and productivity. He is also the author of The Code of the Extraordinary Mind and The Buddha and the Badass.
