Shivani Raja, an Indian-origin Conservative candidate, made history by winning the Leicester East seat in the UK's general election 2024 and took her oath on the Bhagavad Gita.
She ended the Labour Party's 37-year hold on the constituency, defeating Rajesh Agrawal with 14,526 votes to his 10,100.
Shivani, among 27 other Indian-origin MPs elected, took her oath on the Bhagavad Gita, expressing pride in representing Leicester East and swearing allegiance to King Charles.
Her victory is significant in a newly diversified House of Commons, with a record number of women and lawmakers of color.
It was an honour to be sworn into Parliament today to represent Leicester East.
