Washington, D.C., USA: U.S. Vice President JD Vance has addressed the backlash surrounding his recent remarks about his wife’s religion, calling the outrage “disgusting” and labelling the criticism as “anti-Christian bigotry.”
Vance made the statement on October 31 through a post on X (formerly Twitter), following controversy over comments he made during a Turning Point USA event. At that event, he mentioned that he hopes his wife, Usha Vance — who was raised in the Hindu faith — might someday “see things the way I do” concerning Christianity.
In his online response, Vance condemned the negative reactions, writing, “Some of the comments I’ve seen are truly disgusting.” He expressed deep admiration for his wife, describing her as “the greatest blessing in my life” and crediting her for helping him reconnect with religion years ago.
“She is not a Christian and has no intention of converting,” Vance stated. “Like many in interfaith marriages, I hope she may one day share my faith — but no matter what, I’ll always love, respect, and talk with her about faith, life, and everything else, because she’s my wife.”
The Vice President dismissed accusations that his remarks were disrespectful toward Hinduism, asserting that his comments stemmed from his own religious convictions.
“Christians naturally hold certain beliefs, and part of that includes wanting to share those beliefs with others,” he said. “That’s entirely normal — anyone suggesting otherwise has their own agenda.”
Vance’s earlier comments triggered reactions from Hindu American organisations such as the Hindu American Foundation and HinduPact, who criticised his statements as reflecting a “conversion mindset” and lacking sensitivity toward interfaith understanding.
