Lisbon Funicular Crash: 15 Dead, 18 Injured In Historic Cable Car Accident

Lisbon, Portugal: A tragic accident struck Lisbon on Wednesday evening when the iconic Elevador da Gloria funicular veered off track and crashed into a nearby building, leaving 15 people dead and 18 others hurt, including five in critical condition.

Authorities confirmed that a broken cable triggered the derailment of the 1885-built landmark, which links Restauradores Square with Bairro Alto and is among the city’s most visited attractions.

Victims included Portuguese citizens and foreigners, though no children were among the dead. Both passengers and pedestrians were affected.

All injured were taken to local hospitals, with several in critical condition.

Lisbon’s Mayor Carlos Moedas called it a “tragic moment” and declared three days of municipal mourning, offering condolences and support to families.
