Mark Carney has been elected as the next Prime Minister of Canada. In a recent meeting, the ruling Liberal Party selected Carney for the position. Interestingly, he has never contested in direct elections nor held a ministerial role. His unexpected election as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister marks a significant shift. Justin Trudeau had announced his decision to step down in January, making the selection of a new Liberal Party leader necessary.
At 59 years old, Mark Carney defeated Chrystia Freeland, who was in second place, bringing an end to Trudeau’s nine-year tenure. Born in 1965 in Fort Smith, Carney pursued higher education at Harvard. He previously served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and later as the 120th Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. His extensive experience in financial and economic matters makes him a strong candidate for the leadership role.
A total of 152,000 people participated in the voting process, with Carney securing 86% of the votes, confirming his position as the next Prime Minister of Canada. Meanwhile, the United States has announced plans to impose higher tariffs on Canada. However, given Carney’s expertise in economic affairs, Trudeau believed that he is the right person to guide Canada through these challenges.
