Jersey City, New Jersey, USA: A disturbing aviation incident unfolded in the United States on Sunday when two helicopters struck each other mid-air in New Jersey. The collision claimed the life of one pilot, while the other sustained severe injuries and remains in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that only the pilots were aboard the aircraft at the time of the accident.
The crash occurred close to Hammonton Municipal Airport in Atlantic County. Local officials said emergency teams rushed to the scene immediately after reports were received. Fire and rescue units responded swiftly and managed to bring the situation under control.
According to officials from the Federal Aviation Administration, the accident involved an Enstrom F-28A helicopter and an Enstrom 280C helicopter. No passengers were on board either aircraft. The identities of the pilots have not yet been made public.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened a full investigation into the incident. Investigators will review the helicopters’ flight paths, pilot communications, and interactions with air traffic control. They will also examine why one of the helicopters was not detected in time, despite reports indicating clear weather conditions during the flight.
Alan Deal, a former air crash investigator, noted that such collisions often occur when pilots fail to spot another aircraft early enough. Meanwhile, a video reportedly showing the moment of the mid-air crash has been widely shared across social media platforms.
