Washington, D.C.,US: Indian-American Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, who had backed President Joe Biden's re-election campaign in 2024, acknowledged on Sunday that supporting Biden’s decision to run for a second term was a mistake. Khanna admitted misjudging Biden’s readiness, saying, “I made a mistake,” but emphasized there was no deliberate concealment of the president's declining physical or mental health prior to the election.
Speaking on ABC News’ This Week with Jonathan Karl, Khanna stressed that while Biden has a strong track record, those close to him should clarify their part in encouraging his re-election bid. He said, “I don’t think it was a cover-up … but Biden’s advisers owe the public an explanation. The Democratic Party can’t just move on without addressing this.”
Previously, Khanna had defended Biden’s ability to serve a second term, but on Sunday, he shifted his position, stating, “You have to own up to mistakes before moving forward.” Despite his change in stance, Khanna praised Biden’s accomplishments, highlighting his leadership during the post-Covid economic recovery, efforts in clean energy, and revitalization of American manufacturing. He cited initiatives like the CHIPS Act and the Inflation Reduction Act as significant achievements.
Khanna also discussed the Democratic Party’s future, stating his focus is on regaining control of the House of Representatives and connecting more effectively with working-class voters through what he described as “economic patriotism.”
Interestingly, Khanna expressed support for some of former President Donald Trump’s efforts, including attempts to broker a nuclear deal with Iran and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. He noted, “I supported Obama on the Iran deal, and those who did should also support Trump’s efforts. I'm also glad he's speaking out about aid to Gaza.”
Finally, Khanna confirmed he is not considering a presidential bid in 2028.
