Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his role in finalising a “historic” trade agreement, calling it a step towards deeper bilateral cooperation. Trump announced the trade agreement, highlighting plans to jointly explore and develop Pakistan’s largely untapped oil reserves.
He even suggested that Pakistan might eventually export oil to India, despite the country currently relying on imports and lacking the infrastructure to fully exploit its offshore potential.
The deal was announced shortly after Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports, criticizing India’s trade policies and BRICS membership as “anti-US.” India said it had taken note and remains committed to a fair and balanced trade agreement with the US.
Trump also mentioned ongoing negotiations with India and other nations to reduce tariffs and trade deficits, with more details to come.
I wish to convey my profound thanks to President Trump @realDonaldTrump for his leadership role in finalization of the historic US-Pakistan trade agreement, successfully concluded by our two sides in Washington, last night.
