Swaranjit Singh Khalsa Makes History as First Sikh Mayor of Norwich, Connecticut

Norwich, Connecticut, USA:  Swaranjit Singh Khalsa, originally from Punjab, India, has achieved a historic milestone by being elected as the mayor of Norwich, Connecticut. The 40-year-old community leader is now the first Sikh to ever hold this office in the city’s history.

After moving to the United States in 2007, following his family’s displacement due to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in India, Khalsa built his life and career in Norwich. On November 6, he took to Instagram to celebrate his victory, calling it a shared achievement.

“The incredible dedication of countless volunteers, donors, and supporters made this success possible,” Khalsa said. “We won by nearly 20 points — this triumph belongs to every person who believed in our mission.”

A longtime Democrat and a familiar presence in local affairs, Khalsa has served Norwich in several roles over the past decade — including as a member of the City Council, the Board of Education, the Commission on the City Plan, and the Inland Wetlands Commission. He is also active in interfaith initiatives through the Norwich Area Clergy Association and previously served as director of the Norwich Community Development Corporation.

Before entering politics full-time, Khalsa managed his own business, operating the Norwichtown Shell gas station for 12 years. His campaign emphasized strengthening local development and community involvement, reflecting his deep-rooted connection to Norwich residents.

Khalsa considers public service a family tradition, inspired by his father and grandfather, both respected community figures in India. He resides in the Norwichtown neighborhood with his wife, Guntas, and their two daughters.

Expressing gratitude after his win, Khalsa said, “I thank God, this great nation, and the Norwich community for trusting me with this responsibility. I’m deeply honored and humbled.”

He added that he hopes to use his experience as a businessman and community advocate to foster “a more vibrant and prosperous future for everyone in Norwich.”
