Thailand’s Constitutional Court has removed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her cabinet just a year into her term, ruling she breached ethical standards by leaking a phone call with Cambodia’s former leader Hun Sen.
In the June call, which was leaked online, Paetongtarn referred to Hun Sen as “uncle” and called a Thai military commander her “opponent,” prompting the court to say she put personal interests above national ones, undermining public trust.
The decision has sparked a political crisis, leaving the ruling coalition without clear leadership.
Conservative lawmakers criticized her for weakening the military, while coalition partners protested. The ruling echoes last year’s court removal of her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, over similar ethics violations.
