In New York, several foreign students across the United States filed lawsuits in federal courts challenging the sudden orders issued by the Trump administration to expel them from the country in the middle of the academic year. They argued that they were unfairly targeted and expelled from the country without following due legal process, as the Department of Homeland Security revoked their visas. As a result, hundreds of students are facing the penalty of being banned from the country.
The Trump administration also announced that it would halt grants and contracts worth $220 million (approximately ₹18,864 crore) to Harvard University for rejecting the government’s demands to impose restrictions on student activities on campus. Additionally, the administration warned that it would remove the tax exemption privileges, and would begin imposing taxes on Harvard, recognizing it as a political entity. On Tuesday, Trump warned the university through his social media platform, Truth Social.
In a letter written to the university last Friday, the government demanded administrative and leadership reforms. However, Harvard President Alan Garber rejected the government's demands, criticizing the government's orders.
