U.S. Clarifies Stance on India Amid Ongoing Trade Negotiations

The U.S. government has released a statement clarifying that it does not compare India with China, Canada, or Mexico. This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on April 2. Trade-related discussions between India and the U.S. began on Wednesday, with U.S. trade department officials engaging with Indian authorities in Delhi to provide clarity on the matter.

Currently, trade negotiations between India and the U.S. are ongoing. President Trump has been urging countries to reduce tariffs on imports from the U.S. and has issued strong warnings of retaliatory tariffs if they do not comply. In response, the Indian government is considering lowering import duties on U.S. goods.

India is planning to reduce tariffs from 55% to 30%, which could result in a reduction of approximately $23 billion, equivalent to around ₹2 lakh crore. However, this decision is still under review and has not been finalized.
