UN to Cut 7,000 Jobs Amid Budget Crisis and Funding Cuts

Layoffs are not limited to just the IT and other industries. Recently, even the United Nations is planning to lay off its employees. Over the past few years, thousands of jobs have been cut mainly in the IT sector. Due to the economic crisis, reduced revenues, and widespread use of AI, many people have lost their jobs. The UN is also struggling with such financial problems.

The United Nations Secretariat is preparing to cut its $3.7 billion budget by 20% and plans to lay off approximately 6,900 employees. They aim to complete the layoffs by June 13. The United States has reduced the funds it provides annually to the UN. The US contributes about half of the UN’s funding.

During the Trump administration, cuts to American foreign aid severely impacted UN humanitarian organizations. In the current financial year, the US is expected to pay nearly $1.5 billion. Although UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan did not comment on the failures in US payments, he stated that cooperation with the UN is essential to provide a better future for people in the 21st century.
