The US State Department will lay off over 1,300 diplomats and civil servants as part of a Trump administration-led reorganization aimed at streamlining operations.
According to AP, 1,107 civil servants and 246 foreign service officers will receive layoff notices. Affected foreign service officers will be placed on 120 days of administrative leave, while civil servants face a 60-day separation process.
An internal notice stated the layoffs target non-core, redundant, or easily consolidated functions to improve efficiency.
The move, backed by President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has faced criticism from diplomats who warn it may weaken US diplomatic strength.
