The White House said Trump imposed tariffs on India to pressure Russia into a Ukraine peace deal.

Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that the penalties aim to push Putin toward peace.

The spokesperson emphasized that Trump is deeply committed to seeing a resolution to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Earlier, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on India effective August 7, and a second 25% tariff, effective August 27, brought India’s total tariffs to 50%.

Leavitt noted that European leaders met with Trump and visited the White House within 48 hours of talks with Putin due to his efforts for peace.
