Who Is Soma Sengupta, the New Chair of Neurology at Tufts University?

Boston, Massachusetts, USA: Tufts Medical Center has appointed Dr. Soma Sengupta, a physician-scientist originally from Kolkata, as the new chair of the Department of Neurology and neurologist-in-chief.

In addition, Dr. Sengupta has been nominated to serve as the chair and professor of neurology at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM).

Currently a professor and head of the neuro-oncology division, as well as vice chair for neurosurgery research, Dr. Sengupta will now oversee all neurological services. In her expanded leadership role, she aims to drive advancements in key fields such as epilepsy, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases, while also enhancing access to clinical trials and medical education across the healthcare network.

Dr. Sengupta brings significant expertise to the position. She has led over 30 federally and privately funded research projects and authored more than 100 scientific publications, including journal articles, books, and chapters.

Her lab focuses on improving brain tumor treatment outcomes by studying specific ion channels and creating innovative therapeutic drug classes.

Dr. Sengupta earned a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Wales, followed by a PhD and medical degree (MBBChir) from the University of Cambridge. She completed her neurology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Her additional training includes clinical and research fellowships in neuro-oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a fellowship in integrative medicine from the University of Arizona, and a healthcare-focused AI certificate from MIT. She also holds an MBA from the University of Cincinnati and completed executive leadership coursework at Drexel University.
