Recognizing the absence of a mandir and the lack of adequate practicing of Hinduism in South Florida, a small group of Hindus in the Fort Lauderdale area embarked on a mission to spread Sanatan Dharma in the region. In 1981, the group, under the guidance of Pandit Narayan P Sharma, started to conduct religious services at the homes of the various members. Needless to say, the attendance quickly expanded that led to the creation of a formal organization. In 1984, The Florida Hindu Parishad, Inc., was established and registered as a non-profit organization in the State of Florida. The organization also gained tax exemption under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.In early 2004, the Shri Saraswati Devi Mandir was inaugurated. The name was specifically chosen to reflect the organization's goal to educate the children with Hindu religious knowledge and culture so that they will understand, practice, and promote Sanatan Dharma.
