Li Qiang and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Discuss Future Cooperation

China, Beijing: On July 28, 2024, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited China and was hosted by Premier Li Qiang of the State Council. The meeting took place at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Li Qiang highlighted that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Italy. Over these two decades, the bilateral relationship has strengthened political trust, yielded substantial results in practical cooperation, and expanded trade and investment, benefiting both nations. He noted that President Xi Jinping will also meet with Prime Minister Meloni to outline future directions for China-Italy relations. China is eager to work with Italy to honor the agreements reached by both leaders, continue the tradition of friendship, enhance cooperation across various sectors, and contribute to global peace and development.

Li Qiang emphasized China’s readiness to deepen political trust with Italy, guide the bilateral relationship towards greater maturity and stability, and create more positive expectations for enhanced cooperation. He encouraged the effective use of the China-Italy Government Committee and other dialogue platforms to optimize trade and expand cooperation in shipbuilding, aviation, aerospace, new energy, artificial intelligence, and small and medium-sized enterprises. China also plans to host events marking the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's death and strengthen exchanges in literature, art, film, television, and education. He urged Italy to ensure a fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies and to facilitate travel for Chinese citizens. Li Qiang emphasized that protectionism is ineffective and that openness and collaboration result in shared advantages. He also hoped the European Union would maintain an objective view of China, continue its partnership, and support dialogue and cooperation to address global challenges.

Prime Minister Meloni acknowledged the recent close high-level interactions and exchanges between Italy and China, which have significantly advanced their relationship. She reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to fostering a stable and enduring partnership with China, aiming to enhance cooperation in economy, trade, investment, industry, science and technology, and culture. Italy sees the 20th anniversary of the strategic partnership and the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's death as opportunities to strengthen friendship, explore new cooperative avenues, and build a closer relationship. She expressed Italy’s willingness to contribute positively to the EU-China dialogue and to support a stable cooperative relationship.

Following their discussions, the two leaders oversaw the signing of several bilateral cooperation agreements in industry, education, environmental protection, geographical indications, and food safety.
