Nebraska Regent Suggests Memorializing Fans Under Football Field, but Idea Fizzles Out

Barbara Weitz, a University of Nebraska regent, proposed an unconventional idea during discussions about renovating Memorial Stadium: creating a columbarium beneath the football field where lifelong fans could have their ashes interred. Weitz suggested this as a way to blend a memorial service with the university's iconic sports venue, potentially generating revenue to offset a significant budget shortfall of $58 million. She proposed varying prices for niches depending on their location, with prime spots under the 50-yard line or in the end zone commanding higher premiums. Despite presenting the idea with humour, Weitz emphasized its potential to support academic endeavours through generated revenue.

The proposal received mixed reactions from fellow regents. While some chuckled at the suggestion, others expressed skepticism about its practicality and appropriateness. Real estate developer Whit Suber, who had previously proposed a similar concept near Williams-Brice Stadium at the University of South Carolina, voiced support for Weitz's idea. However, Regent Paul Kenney dismissed it as entertaining but impractical for addressing the university's financial challenges. Regent Jack Stark, drawing on his experience as the team psychologist for the Huskers, acknowledged the sentimental appeal but remained cautious about its feasibility as a serious budgetary solution.

Weitz defended her proposal by highlighting Nebraska's deep-rooted sports culture and fans' profound love for their teams. She referenced similar memorials in Europe at sports venues for soccer, rugby, and horse racing, suggesting that such a concept could enhance the fan experience by offering a permanent connection to the team. Despite the scepticism, Weitz envisioned a specially designated entrance for fans to visit the Columbarium on game days, aiming to further integrate the stadium into the fan experience while addressing the university's financial needs.
