Nebraska Regents Proposal for Stadium Columbarium Met with Skepticism

A University of Nebraska regent has suggested a unique way for die-hard Cornhusker fans to maintain their connection to the team even after death. Barbara Weitz of Omaha proposed installing a columbarium beneath Memorial Stadium during its next renovation. This would allow fans to have their ashes interred under the football field.

However, her proposal received a lukewarm reception, with fellow regents laughing off the idea at a recent meeting. Weitz, though acknowledging the light-hearted nature of her pitch, argued against dismissing it outright, especially given the university's $58 million budget deficit. She suggested varying prices for niches based on location, with prime spots under the 50-yard line or end zone commanding a premium. Revenue generated would be directed towards academic funding.

"We Nebraskans have a deep love for our sports teams," Weitz explained. "Being buried under the field could be a fitting tribute to that passion and a creative way to address financial needs."

While scattering ashes at sports venues is not unprecedented, with similar memorials in Europe and at various US universities, critics raise concerns about practicality and appropriateness, citing potential religious sensitivities and impacts on stadium use.

Despite scepticism from some colleagues, Weitz remains hopeful that her proposal could find support, emphasizing the emotional connection fans have with their beloved team.
