A man, identified as Suraj alias Mandi from Bhindisaida village in Amritsar, was shot in the leg after attempting to flee police custody while posing a threat to officers and bystanders. Suraj, who had been involved in two separate snatching incidents targeting Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), snatched a rifle from a police officer during his escape attempt, according to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
The DGP praised the Amritsar commissionerate police for their quick action, which ensured the safety of both the officers and civilians present at the scene. One of the snatching incidents had left a woman injured.
Amritsar Commissioner of Police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that Suraj was apprehended by the Civil Lines police following a thorough investigation into the incidents.
The stolen items, which included £300, €600, ₹22,000 in cash, passports, mobile phones, and various cards, have been recovered.
