Who is Hanu Karlapalem? Indian-origin Democrat launches Alabama campaign

Madison, Alabama: Hanu Karlapalem, the Democratic nominee for Alabama House District 4, officially launched his general election campaign on April 4 in Madison, positioning himself as a challenger to Republican incumbent Parker Moore.

The campaign kickoff event was held at a hotel on Madison Boulevard, where Karlapalem called for three public debates across the district—one each in Limestone, Madison, and Morgan counties. He emphasized that elected representatives should remain accountable to voters through open dialogue.

Karlapalem outlined a campaign platform centered on addressing the rising cost of living, improving public education, expanding access to healthcare, and safeguarding constitutional rights. He stated that his decision to run was driven by the economic challenges faced by working families and what he described as policy priorities that do not align with public needs.

Highlighting economic concerns, Karlapalem noted increasing costs of essential services such as groceries, childcare, healthcare, and utilities, while wages remain largely stagnant. He framed his campaign vision as building “an Alabama people can afford.”

Originally from India and now a naturalized U.S. citizen, Karlapalem also addressed issues related to equal rights and constitutional protections. He criticized proposed measures that could restrict eligibility for public office for naturalized citizens, arguing that such efforts could undermine equal citizenship rights and violate constitutional principles.

In a previously released campaign video, he reiterated his commitment to upholding the Constitution, stating that elected officials must actively defend democratic values.

The event drew supporters from across the district, with Karlapalem encouraging community participation through volunteering and voter outreach ahead of the general election.

A long-time resident of Madison for over 26 years, Karlapalem is a technology entrepreneur and founder and CEO of Vinhamz Inc., a consulting firm specializing in network and cloud services. He brings more than three decades of experience in business, engineering, and information technology.

His civic and political involvement includes leadership roles within the NAACP’s Limestone County branch and the Alabama Democratic Party, where he has served as chairman of the AANHPI Caucus and as a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee.

Karlapalem has previously contested public offices, including the Madison mayoral race in 2016 and the Limestone County Commission election in 2018. He has also been recognized for his international engagement efforts, receiving the Spirit of Diplomacy Award in 2024.

Running unopposed for the Democratic nomination, Karlapalem has secured his position on the general election ballot. The Alabama House District 4 race will be decided in the November 3 general election.
