USA, New York :Over 24,000 members of the Indian diaspora have registered to participate in a major community event set to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi next month.

Titled 'Modi & US: Progress Together,' the event is scheduled for September 22 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which can accommodate up to 15,000 attendees.

The Indo-American Community of USA (IACU) announced on Tuesday that more than 24,000 Indian-Americans have already signed up for this significant gathering, where Prime Minister Modi will deliver a keynote address.

According to a provisional list of speakers released by the United Nations, Prime Minister Modi is also slated to address the UN General Assembly's high-level session on September 26.

The IACU noted that the event registrations have come from 590 community organizations across the U.S., all of which are participating as 'Welcome Partners.' Indian-Americans from at least 42 states are expected to attend, with particularly strong interest from the tri-state area.

"We are dedicated to ensuring the widest possible participation in this historic event," said one of the event's key organizers. "We will do our utmost to expand seating and work closely with our Welcome Partners to prioritize seat allocations for those who confirm their attendance."

The IACU emphasized that the 'Modi & US' event will be a significant occasion, celebrating the rich diversity of the Indian-American community. Participants will include a broad spectrum of religious groups, including Jewish, Zoroastrian, Jain, Christian, Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu communities. The event will also represent India's linguistic diversity, with languages such as Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam, and Gujarati prominently featured

In addition to Prime Minister Modi's address, the event will highlight cultural performances and appearances by notable Indian-Americans in various fields, including business, science, entertainment, and the arts.

The Indo-American Community of USA (IACU) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting understanding and unity within the Indo-American community through cultural events and public programs.

Earlier this month, sources informed PTI that preparations are in full swing for the Long Island event, marking a decade since Modi's massive community address at Madison Square Garden in New York in September 2014, shortly after he assumed office and attended the high-level UN General Assembly session.

In 2019, Modi addressed the 'Howdy Modi' mega-event at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, alongside former President Donald Trump. This year's visit to the U.S. comes just weeks before the U.S. presidential election, featuring a contest between Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, the first woman of Black and Indian descent to vie for the presidency.

The high-level General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled from September 24-30. As per the UN's provisional list, India's Prime Minister is expected to speak in the afternoon of September 26. This list is subject to change, as the UN frequently updates it to reflect changes in attendance, schedules, and speaking slots.

Prime Minister Modi, who took office for a historic third term in June, last addressed the annual UNGA session in September 2021. He also visited the UN headquarters on June 21 last year, leading a historic Yoga Day event at the North Lawn of the UN, before heading to Washington DC for a State Visit hosted by President Joe Biden.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report at the start of the General Debate, followed by an address from the President of the 79th session of the General Assembly.

During the high-level week, Guterres will also convene the ambitious Summit of the Future at the UN Headquarters, with action days scheduled for September 20-21 and the Summit on September 22-23. World leaders will gather to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes.

According to the UN, 'The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.'
