Two Fugitives Apprehended After Escaping Mississippi Jail

Authorities from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation have successfully captured two inmates who recently escaped from a jail located in southwestern Mississippi.

PORT GIBSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has confirmed the apprehension of two inmates who fled from a jail in southwestern Mississippi. According to Claiborne County Sheriff Edward Goods, both men were awaiting trial on murder charges in separate counties and are now facing additional charges related to their escape.

Sheriff Goods reported that Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, were discovered in an abandoned residence within Claiborne County on Saturday. The escape occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Friday from the Claiborne County Detention Center, located in Port Gibson, approximately 60 miles southwest of Jackson

Surveillance footage captured the moment Collins and Johnson breached the jail's ceiling and made their exit through an external wall, Sheriff Goods disclosed.

According to WJTV-TV, Collins faces charges related to the October homicide of his cousin in Copiah County, situated approximately 40 miles west of Claiborne County. As of Friday, there was no public record of an indictment against Collins.

Meanwhile, Johnson is accused of murder and aggravated assault in Jefferson County, located just south of Claiborne County. Court documents indicate Johnson was indicted for the October 2022 murder of one individual and the injuring of two others. His trial is scheduled to commence on October 15th.
