Why is Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto the Guest of Honour at Indias 76th Republic Day?

Jakarta, Indonesia: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will be the distinguished guest at India's 76th Republic Day celebrations, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday. At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Subianto will visit India on January 25 and 26, 2024. Having assumed office as Indonesia's president in October 2024, this will mark his first visit to India. The Ministry emphasized that the trip would strengthen the bilateral ties between the two nations.

Since the 1950s, India has traditionally invited foreign heads of state to its Republic Day festivities, with only a few exceptions in 1952, 1953, and 1966 when no foreign dignitaries were present. In 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron served as the guest of honour, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held the same role in 2023. The celebrations in 2021 and 2022 were held without foreign guests due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
