Sheikh Hasina Faces Arrest Warrant Over Land Acquisition Scandal in Bangladesh

A Bangladesh court on Sunday issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of misusing power and illegally acquiring land. The court included her sister Sheikh Rehana, British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddique, and 50 others in the case. An ACC case was filed against Rehana on January 13, accusing her of purchasing 10 floors of land in the Purbachal Newtown project through misuse of power. In this case, Hasina, Rehana, and Tulip Rizwana Siddique, along with 15 others, were named as suspects.

The ACC filed charges against another 17 individuals and added 18 more names in the final charge sheet submitted on March 10. After reviewing three separate charge sheets, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain issued the arrest warrants. The hearing to review reports on the implementation of the arrest warrants has been postponed to April 27.

In another corruption case related to land allocation in Rajuk, the same court issued arrest warrants for Hasina, her daughter Saima Wajid Putul, and 17 others on April 10. Putul has been working as the Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia in New Delhi since November 1, 2023. Hasina also faces several charges, including mass murder, crimes against humanity, and forced disappearances. Since her government collapsed following a rebellion on August 5 of last year, the 77-year-old Hasina has been residing in India.
