The US and China are clashing over tariff issues. China holds a 13.4% share in US imports. Starting Wednesday, the US, under Trump, imposed an additional 34% tariff on Chinese goods. In retaliation, China announced it would impose an equivalent 34% tariff on US products entering China starting Thursday. In response to Beijing ignoring his warnings, Trump further imposed a 104% tariff. This move escalated trade tensions between the two nations. Reacting strongly to Trump’s decision, China stated it would fight back till the end despite adverse conditions.
On Tuesday, during a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Chinese Premier Li Qiang made crucial remarks. He accused the US of resorting to blackmail under the guise of tariffs. He stated that China had crafted its economic policies to withstand any uncertainty. He also emphasized that China possesses all the strategic tools necessary to counter the high tariffs imposed by the US.
He criticized Trump’s unilateral decisions against US trade partners, calling them examples of protectionism and economic coercion. China warned that such actions would not go unanswered and confirmed that it would certainly respond to these measures.
