A strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck 128 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula at a shallow depth of 10 km early Friday, according to USGS.
The tremor shook buildings and triggered at least five aftershocks, with Russia’s geophysical service estimating it at 7.4.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for hazardous waves, though no damage has been reported so far.
Governor Vladimir Solodov urged residents to stay calm as authorities monitor the situation. Kamchatka, part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to strong quakes — an 8.8 quake in July had already caused a tsunami in the region.
