Atlanta Telugus Build Record 43-Foot Bathukamma in 20th Celebration

Georgia, Atlanta, USA: The Greater Atlanta Telangana Society marks 20 years of cultural celebration with the unveiling of a 43-foot Bathukamma, the tallest of its kind worldwide and the first in the United States, during vibrant Dasara festivities.

On September 28, 2025, Atlanta witnessed the debut of a record-setting 43-foot Bathukamma, an extraordinary feat organised by the Greater Atlanta Telangana Society (GATeS) in honour of its 20th anniversary. The event merged the traditional Bathukamma festival with Dasara celebrations, attracting over 5,000 participants and turning the city into a lively showcase of Telugu heritage.

Over 50 volunteers dedicated months of work in rotating shifts to assemble the towering Bathukamma, decorating it with more than 25,000 feet of bright, colourful flowers. The structure symbolised devotion, solidarity, and the enduring cultural legacy of Telanganites living abroad.

The idea for the monumental Bathukamma was envisioned more than a year ago by architect Anand Bukka and GATeS president Naveen Battini, while chairman Naveen Vujjini managed the project’s execution, according to an official statement.

“This isn’t merely a structure—it embodies the pride and strength of our community,” stated GATeS chairman Naveen Vujjini. Architect Anand Bukka highlighted that the collective effort “demonstrates the unwavering spirit of our people and their deep-rooted cultural traditions.”

The program commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by cultural presentations showcasing Telangana’s artistic heritage. Devotional songs performed by the Sravanthi group, traditional dances by the Sahitya Dance Group, and an energetic Kolatam performance by Priya’s team set a festive tone for the evening.

The event further included Gauri Pooja led by priests and live musical performances from Telangana artists Dandepally Srinivas, Relare Ganga, and Padmavathi Mamidala, engaging the audience throughout.

Dasara rituals, such as the Durga Natha Pallaki Seva and the exchange of Jammi Aaku, added spiritual significance. Thousands of women participated in traditional dance around the immense Bathukamma, creating a vivid display of unity and devotion.

The venue was adorned with Telangana-inspired decorations, including Madhavi’s Kakatiya Thoranam, and featured numerous stalls offering authentic cuisine and cultural experiences. Photography by Raghu Valusani and videography by Sharath Goparaju captured the scale and energy of the event.

GATeS also honoured guest Sudhir Kodati for his early contributions in promoting the Bathukamma festival on an international level.

As the celebration concluded, GATeS leaders expressed appreciation to volunteers, board members, and partners for their ongoing support. “Our volunteers didn’t just construct a 43-foot Bathukamma—they created a lasting legacy,” said president Naveen Battini.

Celebrating two decades of community service, GATeS reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting Telangana’s cultural traditions across the United States. The 20th-anniversary event stood as a powerful testament to devotion, unity, and the vibrant global presence of the Telugu community.
