Bangladesh Removes Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Father of the Nation Title

Dhaka: The interim government of Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus has made another significant decision. The name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been removed as the “Father of the Nation” of Bangladesh. The Ministry of Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued an ordinance to this effect on Tuesday night. According to the news report by the Dhaka Tribune, the government has amended an existing law, redefining the term "freedom fighter," and officially dropped the title “Father of the Nation” from Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

This decision comes just days after the removal of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image from Bangladeshi currency notes. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the father of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The interim government under Yunus has now taken this next step.

According to The Daily Star, the Yunus government has introduced a new interpretation of the Bangladesh Liberation War. Previously, the law stated that the war was fought based on the call for independence given by Bangabandhu. The revised version omits this reference, suggesting a shift in the narrative surrounding the country's liberation history.
