The U.S. government is preparing to implement an executive order by President Donald Trump that limits birthright citizenship.

The order, pending Supreme Court approval, states that children born in the U.S. will only receive citizenship if their father is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

If only the mother holds U.S. citizenship, the child won't be granted automatic citizenship.

Passport authorities will now require original proof of the parents' citizenship or immigration status.
