China Reports Over 7,000 Chikungunya Cases

Chikungunya cases are rising in China, with around 7,000 reported in Guangdong province since July.

Many patients are being treated in Foshan City hospitals, where mosquito nets are being used, and patients are discharged only after testing negative. Most recover within a week, though some may experience long-term joint pain.

Transmitted through mosquito bites, the chikungunya virus often leads to high fever, joint pain, and skin rashes.

Though rare in China, the virus frequently triggers outbreaks in regions like South Asia and Africa.

Infections have now been detected in 12 Chinese cities. A Hong Kong boy was also infected after visiting Nutrition City.

Authorities are taking precautions amid post-COVID vigilance. The U.S. has issued a travel alert, advising travelers to exercise caution and seek medical help for symptoms.
