Chinese President Xi Jinping made a rare visit to Tibet on its 60th anniversary as an autonomous region, emphasizing political stability, social harmony, and ethnic unity.
Speaking in Lhasa, he called for Tibetan Buddhism to adapt to socialist society, while avoiding mention of the Dalai Lama.
The visit highlights Beijing’s efforts to tighten control, including a new Tibet-Xinjiang railway, the Motuo Hydropower Station, stricter education and language policies, and increased oversight of religious and cultural activities.
Rights groups criticized the visit as a way to mask human rights abuses, while observers see it as part of China’s broader strategy to consolidate authority in Tibet.
