Cricket Returns to Olympics After 128 Years: Pomona to Host 2028 LA Matches

It is known that cricket has been included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The ICC has now announced a venue for the competition. The cricket tournament will be held in Pomona city, located in Southern California. Cricket is returning to the Olympics after nearly 128 years. Six teams each in the men's and women's categories will compete. The matches will take place at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, which is about 48 kilometers from Los Angeles.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah welcomed the announcement of the cricket venue for the Los Angeles Olympics. He said cricket is a popular sport, and its inclusion in the Olympics adds prestige to the mega event. He noted that T20 cricket attracts new audiences. The last time cricket was played in the Olympics was in the year 1900 in Paris. Since then, cricket was not part of the Games. However, a decision to reintroduce cricket was taken at the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee held in Mumbai in October 2023.

Along with cricket, sports like baseball-softball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash have also been newly added to the Los Angeles Olympics. Cricket will be conducted in the T20 format. It's worth noting that cricket in T20 format was also part of the Asian Games in 2010, 2014, and 2023, as well as the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
