Donald Trump Expects India to Cut Tariffs, Warns of Reciprocal Measures from April 2

U.S. President Donald Trump has changed his stance on India's tariffs, expressing hope that India will reduce them. In a recent interview with Breitbart News, he stated that there is a significant possibility of India lowering tariffs. Previously, he had claimed credit for India agreeing to reduce taxes.

In the interview, Trump said, "I believe India will significantly reduce tariffs. But from April 2, whatever they impose, we will impose the same." Notably, he has been referring to April 2 as "Liberation Day" in recent statements. His comments come amid expectations of major policy changes in taxation between both countries due to ongoing trade disputes.

If India decides to reduce tariffs, it could impact its economy, trade surplus, and financial markets, particularly in sectors like agriculture, automobiles, and electronics. Trump's dissatisfaction with India's tax policies is well known, as he previously called India the "Tariff King" and pointed out the $100 billion trade deficit between the two nations. Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar emphasized that tariffs and restrictions are a global reality, stating that economic flows, energy supplies, and technology transfers have increased over the past decade, making trade relations crucial for national growth.
