Elk Grove, California, USA: The City of Elk Grove, in collaboration with the USA Sanatan Cultural & Sports Association and the Diversity & Inclusion Commission, hosted its 6th Annual Diwali celebration, marking a colourful and community-driven event filled with joy and unity.
This year’s festivities featured lively cultural performances, a traditional fashion show, and an interfaith diya (lamp) lighting ceremony symbolising harmony and togetherness.
Bhavin Parikh, community leader and lead organiser of the event, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Diwali represents the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. It’s heartwarming to witness our community celebrate these timeless values together.”
Public officials and community members delivered heartfelt speeches during the program. Attendees also enjoyed a complimentary dinner and an assortment of traditional Diwali sweets, adding to the festive spirit.
Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen highlighted the city’s ongoing efforts toward inclusion, stating, “Elk Grove stands as one of the most diverse cities in the country — a place that welcomes everyone.”
Organisers extended special appreciation to California Governor Gavin Newsom for officially recognising Diwali as a state holiday, a gesture that holds deep cultural significance for the Indian American community.
The celebration continues with a follow-up Diwali event planned at the California State Capitol in Sacramento on October 28, symbolising the growing recognition of Diwali across the state.
