Hicksville, New York, USA: The American Punjabi Society (APS) revealed two prestigious new honours — the Punjabi Ratan Award and the Punjabi Virasat Award — during a curtain raiser and media conference held on November 10 at The Pearl in Hicksville. The evening also served as the official kickoff for preparations for the APS Annual Gala, set to take place on December 10 at the Pearl Banquet Hall.
APS President Gary S. Sikka introduced the Punjabi Ratan Award, describing it as the organisation’s most esteemed recognition for leadership, philanthropy, and community service. Translating to “The Jewel of the Punjabi Community,” the award will be presented annually to an individual whose actions and contributions exemplify service and generosity.
“This recognition is more than a trophy—it symbolises APS’s deep gratitude to those who uplift and inspire our community,” Sikka stated.
He also unveiled the Punjabi Virasat (Heritage) Award, dedicated to honoring individuals who actively safeguard and promote Punjabi heritage and traditions. Sikka emphasised the organisation’s role as a unifying force, saying, “APS is not just an association; it is a family built on cultural pride and service. Our collective future depends on unity—by connecting Indian-American groups under one banner, we amplify our shared strength and impact.”
The event began with a welcome address from APS General Secretary Varinder P. S. Sikka, who introduced several community dignitaries and media members. He acknowledged the society’s founding members, including President Gary S. Sikka, Senior Vice President Mohinder Singh Taneja, and Vice Presidents Ajayvir S. Sondhi, Paul S. Bindra, R.P.S. Narang, and Jaspal S. Arora.
Sunil Hali, publisher of The Indian Eye, reflected on the core Sikh values of unity and service. APS Media Director Pradeep Tandon showcased a presentation titled “APS – Celebrating Culture, Service & Community,” highlighting the organisation’s efforts to strengthen cultural ties and compassion within the Punjabi diaspora.
Vice President Ajayvir S. Sondhi outlined the society’s council framework, while Navneet Sikka Sondhi, Chair of the Women’s Council, spoke about the group’s women empowerment programs. Senior Vice President Taneja discussed APS’s partnership with Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder, focusing on safety awareness and community outreach.
Reviewing APS’s initiatives from 2023 to 2025, Gary S. Sikka highlighted activities such as Vaisakhi festivals, blood donation camps, and cancer awareness drives. In recognition of his community contributions, New York City Mayor Eric Adams honoured Sikka with the “Health Achiever of New York” award at Gracie Mansion on June 9.
The 2025 APS Annual Gala will spotlight Punjabi film star Neeru Bajwa and folk music icon Miss Pooja as special guests, both celebrated for their efforts in promoting Punjabi art and culture on a global stage.
