Indian-Origin Arsalan Chaudhary Arrested in Canada’s Largest $20 Million Gold Heist

Mississauga, Ontario, Canada: Peel Regional Police have taken a 43-year-old man, Arsalan Chaudhary, into custody in relation to the theft of gold bars valued at more than $20 million, the biggest gold robbery ever recorded in Canada. The arrest was made on January 12 as part of a wide-ranging probe into the case.

On April 17, 2023, a flight arriving from Zurich, Switzerland, touched down at Toronto Pearson International Airport carrying nearly 400 kilograms of .9999-pure gold worth over $20 million. The cargo also included about $2.5 million in foreign currency. After unloading, the shipment was transferred to a designated high-security zone within the airport grounds. By the next day, officials reported the entire shipment missing and alerted Peel Regional Police.

The investigation, code-named Project 24K, ultimately pointed to Chaudhary as a major suspect in the operation.

Chaudhary is facing charges that include theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained through criminal activity, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense.

Authorities have so far identified and charged nine people in connection with the robbery, bringing the total number of charges to more than 21. In the most recent development, investigators arrested Chaudhary at Toronto Pearson International Airport after he arrived on a flight from Dubai.

Police are also searching for two alleged accomplices linked to Chaudhary: 33-year-old Simran Preet Panesar and 36-year-old Prasath Paramalingam. Panesar, a former employee of Air Canada from Brampton, is wanted on charges of theft and conspiracy and is believed to be in India, where an extradition request is currently pending.
