Brampton, Ontario, Canada: A 42-year-old man of Indian origin, Nirmal Singh, has been taken into custody in Canada after colliding a truck with a police cruiser. Authorities later discovered that the vehicle was stolen and that Singh was prohibited from driving across the country due to a suspended license.
According to Peel Regional Police, the incident occurred on December 22 when officers spotted the truck and attempted to stop it. One day earlier, a semi trailer had been reported missing from a repair facility near East Drive and Torbram Road in Brampton. Investigators believed Singh was operating the stolen vehicle.
Instead of complying with police instructions, Singh continued driving and struck a police cruiser, resulting in significant damage. No officers were injured in the collision. The truck continued moving until it broke down, after which Singh exited the vehicle and tried to escape on foot. Police pursued him briefly before arresting him.
Further investigation revealed that the trailer attached to the truck was also stolen, having been taken from the Halton Region over the weekend of December 20.
Singh has been charged with multiple offenses, including:
- Possession of property obtained by crime (five counts)
- Fleeing from police
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Possession of break in tools
- Possession of automobile master keys (three counts)
Police later confirmed that Singh was under a Canada wide driving suspension, leading to eight additional charges for operating a vehicle while prohibited. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
The case comes amid increased scrutiny of Indian origin truck drivers in both Canada and the United States, following several deadly traffic incidents involving commercial vehicles. Authorities in both countries have intensified enforcement actions, particularly targeting illegal networks accused of issuing fraudulent driving licenses to undocumented migrants.
Recent developments have also influenced trucking regulations in the United States, where stricter language and safety requirements are being enforced after a fatal crash in Florida involving an Indian driver.
