Indian-origin Lyft driver dies in Canada crash; family seeks support, justice

Brampton, Ontario, Canada: In a devastating incident on November 1, 31-year-old Sukhdev Singh, an Indian-origin driver working for Lyft, lost his life in a traffic collision in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The crash occurred at the intersection of Queen Street and Chinguacousy Road. Tragically, a 20-year-old passenger travelling with Singh also died in the early morning accident.

Authorities have charged an individual, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, with dangerous driving causing death and failure or refusal to comply with a lawful demand—typically associated with not providing a required blood or drug sample during a police investigation.

Following the tragedy, Singh’s friend, Dilraj Singh, initiated a fundraiser to cover the cost of repatriating his body to India. "He left behind his cherished wife and three-month-old daughter, with whom he had envisioned a happy life. All his dreams were shattered in an instant due to someone else’s error," Dilraj Singh shared in the fundraising post. The campaign further explained that Singh came from a middle-class family that had taken loans to support his aspirations. "Now his wife faces financial responsibilities alone, along with a little daughter growing up without her father’s love. Every contribution, big or small, will help ease the burden of repatriation costs and provide some support to his family," the fundraiser noted.
