Indian-Origin Man Charged in US Over Cross-Border Extortion Threats

Sacramento, California, USA: An Indian-born man, Jasmeet Singh, is waiting for a court decision in California after authorities charged him with alleged international extortion threats. Singh is accused of delivering threatening messages to an Indian-origin man who had previously helped law enforcement in India apprehend two individuals involved in blackmail.

As reported by CBC News, the victim later relocated to Canada after the blackmail case. Legal filings claim that Singh contacted the individual through phone calls, issuing death threats that crossed national borders. Investigators allege that Singh was operating on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi criminal network.

According to the complaint, Singh allegedly warned the victim that he would be killed even after moving to Canada. The victim further told investigators that Singh sent an image of the victim’s vehicle, which was interpreted as an attempt to intimidate and demonstrate surveillance.

A 14-page criminal charge accusing Singh of transmitting violent threats across state lines was submitted in the Eastern District of California toward the end of November. Singh remains behind bars after a judge determined that his release could pose both a public safety concern and a risk of fleeing the jurisdiction. The court has scheduled the next hearing in this case for December 18.
