Sacramento, California, USA: An Indian-origin rideshare driver has been taken into custody in California in connection with the alleged sexual assault of an unconscious passenger. The accused, identified as Simranjit Singh Sekhon, reportedly picked up the woman in Thousand Oaks in November, according to local media outlet Fox 11.
Investigators say the trip was officially marked as completed, but Sekhon allegedly continued driving the intoxicated passenger to Camarillo, where the assault is said to have occurred. Authorities stated that the victim was heavily under the influence and unable to protect herself at the time of the incident.
The case came to light after the Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit received a report in November, prompting a formal investigation. Sekhon was arrested on December 15 and later charged with the rape of a person who was unconscious. A bail amount of $500,000 was set by the court.
Law enforcement officials indicated that there may be other victims who have not yet reported similar incidents. However, police have not revealed the name of the rideshare company involved or provided details regarding the driver’s immigration or employment status. They confirmed that Sekhon is 35 years old and released his photograph to the public.
In an official statement, police said the victim was intoxicated and incapable of caring for herself. Authorities allege that after the ride ended, the driver continued transporting the woman and sexually assaulted her while she remained unconscious.
The arrest has triggered online debate, particularly as the incident occurred in California, a state led by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Social media users criticized state policies following reports of the case, with some posts alleging that additional victims may exist.
The development has also drawn attention amid broader scrutiny of Indian-origin rideshare drivers in the United States and Canada over unrelated issues, including traffic violations and licensing concerns.
