The United States has intensified its crackdown on illegal immigrants, deporting several Indians who entered the country unlawfully. In a recent case, Indian researcher Bader Khan Suri was expelled from the US for posting content on social media in support of Hamas and against the Jewish community. On Monday, Homeland Security agents arrested him outside his residence in Virginia and subsequently revoked his visa.
Bader Khan Suri was a scholar at Georgetown University in the US. His lawyer confirmed that immigration officials had arrested and deported him. He was taken into custody outside his Virginia residence on Monday night. Authorities identified his social media activity as promoting Hamas propaganda and found alleged ties with a suspected terrorist, leading to the cancellation of his US visa.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Suri had been spreading anti-Jewish sentiment and had links to Hamas terrorists. Consequently, under Section 237(a)(4)(C)(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), a deportation order was issued on March 15, 2025. Suri had completed his Ph.D. in Peace and Conflict Studies from Nelson Mandela Center at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, in 2020, and later moved to Georgetown University for further research. However, his pro-Hamas and anti-Jewish online activities led to his deportation from the US.
