Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Toronto Police have taken into custody a 28-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting that occurred last month at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Indian student Shivank Avasthi. The accused, identified as Toronto resident Babatunde Afuwape, has been formally charged with first-degree murder. However, investigators say they have not yet determined a clear motive behind the crime.
Authorities believe the suspect had no prior acquaintance with Avasthi and that the shooting was not targeted. Police suspect the victim was randomly selected and was unintentionally caught in the attack. Speaking to the media, Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe stated, “We believe the suspect arrived at the location intending to kill someone. How that individual was chosen remains unclear.”
According to police findings, Afuwape spent nearly an hour on the campus before the incident occurred, and investigators confirmed that he was not enrolled as a student at the university.
Safety Concerns Raised After Two Indian Deaths in Canada
The shooting took place in a section of the campus commonly referred to as the valley, an area frequently accessed by students, university employees, and nearby residents. McCabe acknowledged the fear caused by the incident, saying it deeply affected those who regularly use the trail. She assured the public that the accused is now in police custody and no longer poses a threat to the community.
Suspect Was on Parole at the Time of the Shooting
Police revealed that Babatunde Afuwape was on parole for previous firearms-related convictions when the shooting occurred. He was later detained for violating the terms of his parole. Shivank Avasthi was a third-year international student at the university and was described by authorities as a promising young individual with a bright future.
“He was young, intelligent, and had his entire life ahead of him,” McCabe said. “Our thoughts continue to be with his family, friends, classmates, and everyone impacted by this tragic loss.”
The shooting occurred on December 23, 2025. Following the incident, the Indian Embassy expressed profound sorrow over Avasthi’s death. In an official statement, the embassy said it was deeply saddened by the loss of the young Indian student in a fatal shooting near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. The consulate confirmed it was in constant contact with the grieving family and was providing all possible assistance while working closely with local authorities.
