Indian Techie Shot by Police in California; Family Appeals to MEA for Repatriation

Santa Clara, California, USA: Mohammed Nizamuddin’s father stated that the incident took place on September 3 following a confrontation with his roommate.

A 30-year-old man from Mahabubnagar district in Telangana, identified as Mohammed Nizamuddin, was reportedly shot by police in Santa Clara, California, earlier this month. According to his family, who spoke to PTI, the incident occurred on September 3. His father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, confirmed that the tragedy followed a dispute with his roommate.

The complete details of what led to the police action are still uncertain.

Hasnuddin mentioned that he first learned about his son’s passing from a family friend and only received official confirmation on Thursday morning. In a written appeal to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, he requested help in ensuring that his son’s body is brought back to India.

“This morning I was informed that my son Nizamuddin was shot by Santa Clara Police and that his remains are kept at a hospital there. I have no clarity about the reasons behind the shooting,” he wrote in his letter, as reported by PTI.

He urged the Ministry of External Affairs to instruct the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, and the Consulate General of India in San Francisco to provide support in repatriating his son’s remains.

Telangana Leader Raises Concern Online

Amjed Ullah Khan, spokesperson of the Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) party in Telangana, highlighted the case on X (formerly Twitter). He shared the grieving father’s request and appealed for swift intervention by the Indian government.

Khan mentioned that Nizamuddin had traveled to the United States to pursue his Master’s degree and was working there as a software professional. He added that Nizamuddin was shot by police during an altercation with his roommates, and that his remains are currently in a Santa Clara hospital.
