Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats regarding tariffs, migrant deportations, and military intervention against drug cartels. She made it clear that she is not afraid of Trump’s actions. When asked by a reporter whether she was concerned about Trump's warnings, Sheinbaum firmly stated that she is not intimidated and has the full support of the Mexican people. She also emphasized that any attempt to undermine Mexico’s sovereignty would be strongly opposed.
Trump had previously imposed a 25% tariff on Mexico, which was later suspended for a month. In light of this, officials from both countries are set to meet in Washington this week for further discussions. Trump has accused Mexico and Canada of failing to prevent the illegal trafficking of fentanyl and the influx of migrants into the U.S. In response, he threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from these countries, signing an executive order to enforce the decision shortly after taking office.
Taking the issue seriously, both Canada and Mexico considered imposing retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports. Following negotiations, Trump announced a temporary suspension of the tariffs for one month. In response to concerns about drug smuggling and illegal immigration, Mexico deployed 10,000 troops to its northern border. Despite these efforts, Trump went ahead with his reciprocal tariff policies, intensifying tensions between the two nations.
