Ulaanbaatar: Mongolia’s Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene has resigned from his position. He failed to secure support in a parliamentary vote of confidence amid corruption allegations. As a result, he stepped down as Prime Minister. During the vote of confidence, only 44 lawmakers supported him, while 64 votes were required for the motion to pass. Falling short by 20 votes, Oyun-Erdene resigned. The parliament has 30 days to elect a new Prime Minister, and until then, Oyun-Erdene will serve as the acting Prime Minister.
Allegations surfaced that Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene’s son spent lavishly on luxuries. Reports also implicated the Prime Minister in corruption, leading to widespread protests in the capital city Ulaanbaatar over recent weeks. There were growing demands for his resignation amid the uproar. In response, a secret ballot was held in parliament, where he was defeated, leading to his resignation.
